Descrição do curso:
This is the first programme in any tertiary arts institution or university worldwide whose entire focus and content is on modern and contemporary Asian art and their histories. As such, this MA programme gives students the opportunity to undertake research on a largely untrodden field and thereby contribute to its discourse and scholarship. While virtually every artist and subject in Euro-American art history has been researched to some extent or another, students in this programme will have a vast research field to explore. This programme seeks to fill the gap in the scholarship of modern and contemporary Asian art by providing an academic framework for the serious study and research of the subject. Given the scope and diversity of its landmass, it is sometimes not clear exactly what constitutes Asia, geographically or indeed culturally. However, the programme treats Asia not so much as a geographical entity with a homogenous identity (a construct that is seen as a counterpoint to Europe and the West) but acknowledges the unique historical, social, cultural, political and economic specificities of the individual countries which make up the region. By focusing on modern and contemporary Asian art, the programme is in line with LASALLE College’s focus on contemporary art practice. As this practice continues to be informed by an Asian trajectory as much as a Western one the programme will seek to provide a theoretical framework for artistic production. The career paths are Museum curator, museum administrator, arts administrator, art critic, art writer, gallery manager, art consultant, academic, art gallerist.
